This is a formula film. One gets the impression of having seen it before in one place or another. Our hero puts together the old crew, pulled from whatever they're doing now. There's the ill codger who signs on even though its probably his last job - because he's the best and because it's better to go out with glory than to fade away. The love element is cardboard. We are told more than shown how dangerous the villain is (perhaps expected to draw upon memories of Andy Garcia's other gangsterish roles for that). The "nobody's ever done it" can barely drum up a "so what". We don't love these guys and hope they get away with it; they don't give us a reason to care. The best part of the film is the banter between Clooney's character and Pitt's, but even that comes off as contrived. It would be a better pre-feature short flick than an A-movie. The cast is certainly fun to watch (Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Andy Garcia) but one could just as easily go for a second viewing of a really good film starring any of these wonderful actors. Even their characters seem like pieces of characters they've played in more interesting films.
